Everything you want to know about Sumbawa whale shark tours
The optimal period to visit Sumbawa for whale shark encounters is April through November, when sea conditions are calmest and visibility is at its best. During these months, the weather is stable, the water is clearer, and you’ll have the highest chances of successful interactions. However, whale sharks are present in Saleh Bay year-round thanks to the year-round operation of local fishing bagans (platforms) that naturally attract them by stirring up plankton, their primary food source.
Early morning departures (04:00 AM) are particularly effective because fishermen typically raise their nets at dawn, creating ideal feeding conditions. If you’re visiting between November and April (rainy season), sightings are still possible, though sea conditions may be less favorable and visibility can vary. We recommend booking your trip during the dry season for the most reliable experience.
Yes, whale shark encounters are safe when proper protocols are followed. Whale sharks are filter feeders that consume only plankton and tiny fish particles—they are completely harmless to humans. Safety is our top priority on every tour. All participants receive a comprehensive safety briefing before entering the water, covering proper entry techniques, distance maintenance, and behavior guidelines.
Our guides in Sumbawa are trained professionals with extensive experience in whale shark interactions. All participants wear life jackets and snorkeling masks for added security, and our team maintains constant supervision throughout the activity. We strictly enforce a minimum distance of 3-4 meters from the shark’s body and 4 meters from its tail to protect both you and the animal. Sudden movements are avoided, and you’ll be guided to enter the water calmly and smoothly to prevent startling the whale sharks.
While whale sharks are reliably present in Saleh Bay due to the year-round fishing operations that attract them, we understand that nature can be unpredictable. Our strong coordination with local fishing crews and our strategic timing at feeding platforms significantly increase your chances of encounters. Typically, visitors see multiple whale sharks during a single tour.
However, in the rare event of unfavorable visibility or exceptional circumstances, our team will work with you to reschedule at no additional cost or provide alternative dates. We operate under a commitment to your satisfaction, and we won’t leave you without a solution. It’s important to note that sea conditions and wildlife sightings can vary, but our decades of local knowledge and operational experience maximize your encounter probability.
Jellyfish can occasionally be present in Sumbawa’s waters, with reports of increased activity during the November to January period. However, this is not a consistent seasonal occurrence and depends on water temperature and currents. Most snorkelers pass through without incident.
If you’re concerned about jellyfish exposure, we recommend wearing a rash guard, wetsuit, or full-body snorkeling suit to provide protection. Light, breathable options are available for tropical waters and won’t hinder your experience. Our guides monitor water conditions carefully and will advise you of any jellyfish presence before entering the water. We’ve successfully operated tours year-round with proper precautions in place. Inform us of any sensitivities before your tour so we can provide additional guidance.
No special swimming ability is required to participate in this whale shark tour. The experience is designed for snorkelers of all levels, from complete beginners to experienced swimmers. You’ll be in snorkeling depth (6-8 meters at the whale shark spots), and life jackets are provided to all participants for added buoyancy and confidence in the water.
If you’re not a strong swimmer or are nervous about deep water, wearing a life jacket is recommended and strongly supported. Our guides are trained to accommodate various swimming abilities and will ensure you feel comfortable throughout the experience. The tour activities include boat-based observation as an alternative if you prefer not to enter the water. Many of our participants are first-time snorkelers, and with proper equipment and guidance, the experience is accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
